From Proto-Tai *raːᴮ (epidemic). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩁ᩵ᩣ, Lao ຮ່າ (), Shan ႁႃႈ (hāa), Phake ꩭႃ (), Ahom 𑜍𑜠 (ra), Zhuang raq, Zuojiang Zhuang haq.
