In bronze script, written as 悊 (zhé) and other variants, with no evidence of the existence of 哲 (zhé) until small seal script. In 說文解字/说文解字 (Shuōwén Jiězì), described as a Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *ʔl'ed): phonetic 折 (OC *l'eːl, *ʔljed, *ɦljed) + semantic 口 (“mouth”) .
