Etymology

Compound of 立ち (tachi, “standing”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 立つ tatsu, “to stand”) +‎ 食い (kui, “eating”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 食う kuu, “to eat”, masculine informal).^[1]^[2] The kui changes to gui as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
