Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *l̥ʰiːmʔ) : semantic (tongue) + phonetic (OC *l̥ʰiːmʔ, *l̥ʰiːms).

Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ljam (tongue; flame). The Cantonese vernacular reading (Guangzhou lim2 or lem2; Taishan liam2) preserves the Old Chinese lateral initial *l̥-.
