Etymology

Officially, no later than 1684 with the creation of Taiwan Prefecture ((deprecated template usage) 臺灣府). Derived from a phonetic transliteration of the Dutch term "Tayowan" / "Tayouan" (and other variants), which is thought to be derived from an ethnonym of the Taivoan tribe in the area of Anping, Tainan, southwest Taiwan. A Dutch missionary referred to this group as Taiouwang no later than 1636. Other phonetic transliterations in Chinese characters included 臺窩灣, 大員, 大圓, 臺員 and 臺圓.

Possibily derived from Siraya tayw (man) and an (place).
