German
Etymology
From Middle High German schouwen, from Old High German scouwōn, from Proto-Germanic *skawwōną (“to look, see, watch”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewh₁- (“to heed, look, feel, take note of”). Cognate with Old English scēawian (“to look at, examine, show”). Compare English show.
Pronunciation
Verb
schauen (weak, third-person singular present schaut, past tense schaute, past participle geschaut, auxiliary haben)
- (intransitive) to look (at something, at a certain location, in a certain direction)
- (transitive) to watch, to view
- Ich schaue gern Fußball.
- I like to watch football/soccer.
Usage notes
- In writing, schauen is normal throughout the language area.
