From Ancient Greek αὐτονομία (autonomía), from αὐτόνομος (autónomos), from αὐτός (autós, “self”) + νόμος (nómos, “law”). Surface analysis auto- (“self”) + -nomy (“a system of rules or laws about a particular field”).
