From Persian لاجورد ‎(lâjvard, azure), via Arabic لَازَوَرْد ‎(lāzaward, azure), stemming from Sanskrit राजावर्त ‎(rājāvarta, lapis lazuli). Cognate with English azure, French azur, and Spanish azul.
