From Persian لاجورد (lâjvard, azure), via Arabic لَازَوَرْد (lāzaward, azure), ultimately stemming from Sanskrit Sanskrit राजावर्त (rājāvarta, lapis lazuli). Cognate with English azure, French azur, and Portuguese/Spanish azul.
