From Proto-Ugric *palɣɜ ‎(village). Cognates include Northern Mansi па̄вэл ‎(pāwəl), Eastern Khanty пугәӆ ‎(pugəł). Relationship to the Finnish verbs palvella ‎(to serve), palvoa ‎(to worship) has also been proposed.
