From Old Swedish gita (“succeed, accomplish, bring”), a younger form of Old Swedish gæta (“tell, guess, get hold of”), from Old Norse geta, from Proto-Germanic *getaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰed- (“take, seize”). Related to Danish gide and Icelandic geta and also to Swedish förgäta, gissa, gåta, gäta.
