Inherited from Old French mestier, inherited from Vulgar Latin *misterium, a conflation of mystērium (whence French mystère) and ministerium (whence French ministère). Compare Portuguese mester, also Portuguese mister, Italian mestiere, Spanish and Catalan menester.
