From Proto-Vietic *-moː.

Attested as イモヲ (modernized kana spelling イモォ (i mō)), i.e. đi mô (“go where”), glossed 何処 (“where”), in the Annan Hyōryūki (安南漂流記, 1767), recorded the South Central dialect of Hội An.
