Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *paziti(to heed). Cognate with Bulgarian пазя(pazja, to safeguard), Slovene paziti(protect), Ukrainian пазити(pazyty, to look after). Non-Slavic cognates include Old Norse spakr(wise), speki(wisdom), spekja(to soothe). Compare Latin speciō(to watch).
