From Middle Vietnamese rẳn, from Proto-Vietic *p-səɲʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(b)saɲʔ; cognate with Muong thắnh, Khasi bseiñ and Pacoh cuxanh. Compare also Khmer ម្សាញ់ (msañ, Year of the Snake) and North Central Vietnamese tắn.
