Etymology

From Latin smaragdus, from Ancient Greek σμάραγδος (smáragdos), μάραγδος (máragdos), from Semitic root b-r-q “to shoot lightning, to flash in darkness”, compare Hebrew בָּרֶקֶת (bareket, emerald, flashing gem), Akkadian 𒁀𒊏𒄣 (/⁠baraqu⁠/, literally scintillation), Arabic بَرْق (barq, lightning, flashing, shining, dazzling).

Sanskrit मरकत (marakata) from Semitic. Persian zumrud (whence Turkish zümrüd, whence Russian изумруд (izumrud)) from Ancient Greek.
