From Middle English thirttene , variant (through metathesis) of thrittene , from Old English þrēotīene , from Proto-Germanic *þritehun , compound of *þrīz ( “ three ” ) + *tehun ( “ teen ” ) . Cognate with West Frisian trettjin , Dutch dertien , German dreizehn , Danish tretten .
