Finnish

[edit]From Proto-Norse. Compare Swedish fitta and Old Norse fytta. Cognate to Estonian vitt, Ingrian vittu, and Veps vitõińe. For sense 3, compare Russian пиздец (pizdec).
Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /ˈʋitːu/, [ˈʋit̪ːu]
Audio: (file) - Rhymes: -itːu
- Syllabification(key): vit‧tu
- Hyphenation(key): vit‧tu
Noun
[edit]vittu (vulgar)
- (literally) cunt, pussy, twat
- An intensifier, roughly equivalent to "fucking" or "fuck".
- mennä vituiksi ― to go wrong, to be fucked up
- Vitun idiootti!
- Fucking idiot!
- Mitä vittua?
- What the fuck?
- A place that is not here, used in certain expressions of place; fuck, hell.
Usage notes
[edit]- Considered at least as vulgar as (and usually more vulgar than) fuck in English, probably closer to English cunt in terms of vulgarity.
- As the words kettu (“fox”), pottu (“potato”) and hattu (“hat”) rhyme with vittu, they may be used as a replacement for vittu and its derivatives to make the language more decent:
