From Middle High German wegen, from Old High German wegan, from Proto-Germanic *weganą, from Proto-Indo-European *wéǵʰe-, *weǵʰ-. Although the base word now has -ie- (after 2sg. and 3sg. pres. ind.), derived terms such as bewegen retain the -e-. Compare Dutch wegen, English weigh, Danish veje, Icelandic vega.
