From Proto-Hellenic *tʰūmós, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (smoke). Cognates include Sanskrit धूम (dhūmá), Lithuanian dūmas, Latin fūmus, Old Church Slavonic дꙑмъ (dymŭ) and Albanian tym (smoke).
