Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Byzantine Greek κόβω (kóbō), from the Ancient Greek κόπτω (kóptō, cut) from the perfective stem κοψ- in the pattern of -ψ- > -β- as in κλέπτω (klépto), κλεψ- > κλέβω (klévo, steal).[1] Also see κόπος (kópos, toil). Doublet of κόπτω (kópto).
