From triliteral root ʾ-b-b, meaning "to be thick," "to swell," or "to ripen." Possible cognate to Arabic أَبّ(ʾabb, pasture, herbage). Not related to Coptic ⲉⲡⲓⲡ (epip, November), a false friend.
