Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥tós (dead), from *mer- (to die). Cognate with Latin mortuus, Ancient Greek βροτός (brotós), Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬙𐬀 (mərəta), Persian مرده (morde). See also मर्त (márta), derived from a related root.
