Borrowed from Persian سال(sâl), from Middle Persian ŠNT (sāl), from Old Persian 𐎰𐎼𐎭 (θ-r-d), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćarHáts. Doublet of शरद् (śarad, a year).
