Ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : 鹿 (deer) + (soil, dust) – cloud of dust produced by a (group of) running deer. Ancient simplification of 𪋻, which pictures three deer on top instead of one.

Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-dul ~ r-tul (dust). Cognate with Tibetan རྡུལ (rdul, dust, particle).
