Ideogrammic compound (會意会意) and phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *luɡ) : phonetic (, cauldron) + semantic (rice) — congee. is a cauldron with three hollow legs, in which (“rice”) is cooked. The two depict the steam emitted from the congee in the cauldron.

(“congee”) is the reduced form of the character . has since been phonetically borrowed to mean "to sell".
