From French Chécagou, a transcription of Miami [Term?] or Potawatomi shikaakwa (“wild onion, leek; striped skunk”). Compare Ojibwe zhigaagawanzh / zhigaagawinzh (“onion, leek”), zhigaag (“striped skunk”).
