From Middle Dutch vri, from Old Dutch frī, from Proto-West Germanic *frī, from Proto-Germanic *frijaz, which derives from Proto-Indo-European *preyH- (to be fond of). Related to vrijen (to love), vrijdag (friday), vriend (friend), vrouw (woman), and vrede (peace).
