From Middle High German abfallen, abvallen, abefallen, abevallen, abe vallen, equivalent to ab- +‎ fallen. Cognate with German Low German offallen, Dutch afvallen, West Frisian ôffalle, Saterland Frisian oufale, oufaale, Middle English offallen (modern English fall off).
