Affixed bagi +‎ -an, from Malay bagian (Standard Malay bahagian), from Classical Malay بهاݢين (bahagian), باݢين (bagian).

The superseded spelling bahagian was used as translation of Japanese () (bu, department) during the Japanese occupation.
