From Proto-Slavic *terti, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (to rub, rub by twisting, twist, turn). Cognate with Latin terō (to rub), Ancient Greek τρίβω (tríbō, to rub), Lithuanian trinti (to rub), Latvian trīt (to rub), Armenian թրել (tʻrel, to knead).
