Cognate with Old Norse visenn (faded, decayed), Old English weornian (to destroy), Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐍅𐌹𐍃𐌰𐌽 (frawisan, to consume, waste, squander). Compare Latin virus, Ancient Greek ἰός (iós), Sanskrit विष (viṣa, poison).[1]
