Baltic cognates include Lithuanian vèsti (“to lead”), Latvian vest (“to lead”), Old Prussian west, weddē, Lithuanian vẽdė, dialectal Latvian vede. Further Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit वधू (vadhū, “bride, young wife”), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬜𐬎 (vaδu), Old Irish fedid (“to go, bring”), Avestan 𐬬𐬁𐬜𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (vāδaiieiti), possibly Albanian vjedh.
