From Proto-Slavic *pьsati, *pisati, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ- (to paint, draw). Compare Slovene pisati, Macedonian пишува (pišuva), Bulgarian пиша (piša), Polish pisać.
