Etymology 1

From Middle Persian [script needed] (bwl /⁠bōr⁠/, reddish-brown, bay [horse]). Cognate with Ossetian бур (bur, yellow), Northern Kurdish bor (grey) and the Old Armenian loanword բորենի (boreni, hyena). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (brown).
