Unknown; possibly cognate with Pashto وېروه(werwa, pear), perhaps from Proto-Iranian *wr̥bíš, ultimately of origin.

Etymology[edit]

From گلاب(gulab "rosewater") +‎ ـی(-ī suffix forming nouns or adjectives) literally "rosewatery" or "rosewater-like". The word and suffix are derived from Classical Persian, the term itself is specifically of Indo-Persianate tradition, with the rest of Persianate world using صورتى (surati "pink") an Arabic borrowing.
