From Middle Persian bwl (bōr, reddish-brown, bay [horse]). Cognate with Ossetian бур (bur, yellow), Sanskrit बभ्रु (babhru, deep-brown, reddish-brown, tawny) and the Old Armenian loanword բորենի (boreni, hyenea). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰebʰru-, reduplicated from *bʰer- (brown); cognate with Proto-Germanic *bebruz.
