Apparently Tur's original name was some equivalent of tovarmiš, but he was renamed to the current name related to Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (twlkʾ /⁠tōlag, tōrag⁠/, “jackal”), whence Persian توله (tule, “whelp, jackal”), Persian توره (ture, “jackal”) and Classical Syriac ܛܘܪܝܓ (/⁠*ṭōrīg⁠/, “jackal”), from Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬥𐬀 (ta^uruna, “young”), because he went rogue.

• From Middle Persian twl (/⁠tūr⁠/, “Turanian”), from Avestan 𐬙𐬏𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (tūⁱriia). Dehkhoda attests that the name originally meant brave, but because the Turanians were enemies of Iran the term began to gain a negative connotation.
