Etymology 6
[edit]- See توران (turân). Apparently Tur's original name was some equivalent of tovarmiš, but he was renamed to the current name related to Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (twlkʾ /tōlag, tōrag/, “jackal”), whence Persian توله (tule, “whelp, jackal”), Persian توره (ture, “jackal”) and Classical Syriac ܛܘܪܝܓ (/*ṭōrīg/, “jackal”), from Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬥𐬀 (tauruna, “young”), because he went rogue.
- From Middle Persian twl (/tūr/, “Turanian”), from Avestan 𐬙𐬏𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (tūiriia). Dehkhoda attests that the name originally meant brave, but because the Turanians were enemies of Iran the term began to gain a negative connotation.
