Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ʔ-(d/g)rup (to sew). Cognate with Tibetan འདྲུབ་ ('drub, idem) (STEDT khyup "sew, bind; confine; cut off; imprison; control, rule").

The other senses, such as "confine", "control", and "summarize", are all considered equivalent to the "sew" sense by MED, as a form of "binding".
