Ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : (mouth) + (ten) – many voices in harmony. (OC *ɡjub) may also act as a phonetic component. It is used as a variant of (OC *ɦleːb) since antiquity.

It was later borrowed for because (xié) and are homophones in (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Wu. This usage was made official in Simplified Chinese.
