Etymology

[edit]

Analyzable as a compound of 安心 (anshin, peace of mind, a term connected with Buddhism, literally easygoing + mind) +‎ 立命 (ritsumei, peace of mind, a term connected with Confucianism, literally upright + life).[1][2][3][4]

The latter component 立命 (ritsumei) is only attested relatively recently, and generally in combination with 安心 (anshin), indicating that this may have been borrowed in toto from Chinese 安心立命 (ānxīnlìmìng) as a 四字熟語 (yoji jukugo, four-character aphorism).

First attested in a text from 1891.[1]
