on'yomi

From Old Japanese, from  (あぢ) () (あゐ) (ajisaawi): あづ (azu), related to modern  (あつ)まる (atsumaru, to gather) and  () (あい) (saai, true indigo).

Like most flower names in Japanese, ajisai uses kanji for purely semantic purposes; translated literally to "purple sun flower". This kanji compound, from Chinese, is an example of jukujikun. The compound can also be read in on'yomi, but it is less common than ajisai.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

紫陽花 (hiragana あじさい, katakana アジサイ, rōmaji ajisai, historical hiragana あぢさゐ)

紫陽花 (hiragana しようか, katakana シヨウカ, rōmaji shiyōka, historical hiragana しやうくわ)

  1. hydrangea

Usage notes[edit]

  • Since this a biological term, it is often spelled in katakana.
