Etymology 2
Compare Aramaic וַרְדָּא (wardā), ܘܪܕܐ (wardā), Hebrew וֶרֶד (wéreḏ). Borrowed from an Iranian language; compare Old Persian *wṛda- (“flower”), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬜𐬀- (varəδa-), Sogdian ward, Parthian wâr, late Middle Persian gwl (gul), Persian گل (gul), from Proto-Indo-European *wr̥dʰos (“sweetbriar”). Iranian languages are also the source of words borrowed into numerous European languages including Old Armenian վարդ (vard) and Ancient Greek ῥόδον (rhódon) (Aeolic ϝρόδον (wródon)), whence Oscan, whence Latin rōsa, whence English rose. More at rose.
