From Pali buddha (awakened, enlightened), Buddha (the Buddha), from Sanskrit बुद्ध (buddha, awakened, enlightened) past participle of बोधति (bodhati, wake), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewdʰ- (to be awake, aware), whence also English bid and bede.
