Vietnamese[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese, from 博士, from Chinese 博士 ‎(Ph.D.), from Japanese 博士 ‎(hakushi, Ph.D.), from Middle Chinese 博士 ‎(pak dzriX, court academician); also probably by analogy with European languages, such as English doctor, French docteur ‎(Ph.D.; physician).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

bác

  1. doctor; physician

Usage notes[edit]

The mondern sense of bác sĩ is a misapplication of the term. A modern "bác sĩ" is not necessarily a doctor (one who achieves a doctorate), but any one who practices medicine who has graduated from a medical school.
