Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 博士, composed of (wide; vast; broad) and (-ist), from Japanese 博士 (hakushi, doctor, person who has attained a doctorate), earlier 博士 (hakase, Japanese court academician), from Middle Chinese 博士 (pwɑk̚ d͡ʒɨX, Chinese court academician). Also probably by analogy with European languages, such as English doctor, French docteur (Ph.D.; M.D.; physician).
