Sino-Vietnamese word from 博士, composed of (“wide; vast; broad”) and (“-ist”), from Japanese 博士 (hakushi, doctor, person who has attained a doctorate), from Middle Chinese 博士 (pak dzriX, court academician). Also probably by analogy with European languages, such as English doctor, French docteur (Ph.D.; M.D.; physician).
