German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From ihr +‎ -zen.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈiːʁtsən/, [ˈʔi(ː)ɐ̯.t͡sn̩]
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: ihr‧zen

Verb[edit]

ihrzen (weak, third-person singular present ihrzt, past tense ihrzte, past participle geihrzt, auxiliary haben)

  1. to address using the pronoun ihr

Usage notes[edit]

  • The practice of ihrzen towards a singular person is now mostly associated with archaic and poetic language.
  • However, it remains common in certain regional dialects and may transpire into colloquial Standard German. In the Rhineland, for example, it is sometimes heard as a compromise form between siezen and duzen when the former feels too formal and the latter too informal (e.g. towards a new customer in a pub where du is used towards the regulars).
