18th century. Perhaps borrowed from Mandingo cano, or from a language of the East Indies.

- A botanical gum produced by various trees and other plants, particularly bloodwood species of eucalypts (Lua error in Module:taxlink at line 68: Parameter "ver" is not used by this template., Corymbia, Eucalyptus), Butea, and Pterocarpus, used in tanning and dyeing and as an astringent in medicine.
