From Middle Vietnamese nước, from Proto-Vietic *ɗaːk (water), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɗaak (water). Cognates with Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects nác, Muong đác, Khmer ទឹក (tik), Bahnar đak, Eastern Mnong dak, Central Nicobarese râk/dâk and Santali ᱫᱟᱜ (dak’).
