Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *ɲaː (house), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *[j]aa[ʔ] (house) or *sŋiʔ (house) (both problematic in correspondences, however). Akin to Pong ɲaː ("house"), Muong [Hòa Bình] ɲaː² ("house"); possibly cognate with Old Mon sŋiʔ ("house", Modern Mon သ္ၚိ (hɔeˀ, house)).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (Hà Nội) IPA(key): /ɲaː˨˩/
  • (Huế) IPA(key): /ɲaː˧˧/
  • (Hồ Chí Minh City) IPA(key): /ɲ̻aː˨˩/

Sino-Vietnamese: gia (). The prefix sense is clearly influenced by 家 in Chinese, for example 科學家 (kēxuéjiā) - nhà khoa học ("scientist").
