From Middle English rike, From Old Norse ríki, from Proto-Germanic *rīkiją, from Proto-Germanic *rīks, an early borrowing from Proto-Celtic *rīxs, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗǵs. Cognate with Dutch rijk, German Reich and Swedish rike (“kingdom, realm, land, empire, country”).
