From Proto-Vietic *vaːs (to broadcast (rice)), perhaps from Proto-Mon-Khmer *bah, *baas (to flow out). Alternatively, a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (to broadcast; to sow, SV: ). Compare Khmer ពាស (piəh, spreading throughout), Mon ဟး (hah, to overflow).
